How to use textures in interior design
In interior design we use what is known as visual weight. An effect without which the rooms seem flat. To gain this visual weight, what is done is to use textures that combine the contrast and depth needed to create accents.Any interior design is well below the professional level when it does not have a texture scheme designed so that the decoration is balanced, nor is it too predictable or staged. Texture is the sensation produced by how things feel through our senses .Using textures is the art of mixing rough and soft. Although it may be a tactile effect, it is actually a visual effect . In fact, using the texture correctly goes far beyond mixing materials. Elements such as light or layering are some of the tricks that help us use textures fluently.Layer overlayIn decoration, rich and deep-filled schemes have their key in the creation of multiple layers . It is about the textures being spoken and combined between them. Regardless of the elements that we will include to use the textures, they must create contrast with each other. As an example we can mention the impact produced by the glass of the base of a table lamp with the leather of some old books placed next to it. The contrast of a polished granite fireplace with a fluffy carpet at its feet .The walls are always a good framework to use textures. The different treatments that we can give to a wall so that they are multidimensional , even, the correct placement of paintings and works of art in them can give us this effect. How to use textures with fabricsUndoubtedly, some of the best sources for texture in the decoration of a space are fabrics . Its use provides the necessary balance to a room lacking texture and contrast .We can create texture by combining the colors of textiles, but we especially like the use of different materials with fabrics in the same tones . This creates depth and texture in a simple way and with spectacular results. When we talk about giving texture through fabrics, we should not limit ourselves exclusively to sofas and cushions. All the fabrics of the room must participate in the texture game . This includes curtains, carpets, upholstery and lampshades. The combination of linens with velvets, long-haired wool with shiny silks or faux fur is always a success. The tendency to use the same type of fabric throughout the room is a very common mistake in decoration. Being daring and not being afraid of contrasts is a guarantee to use textures correctly.Textured furnitureThe furniture provides us with a great opportunity to add texture to a room. The contrast of a marble or glass table, smooth and cold, on rattan or wool rugs immediately creates texture in a dining room.Coordinating a sofa and an armchair in color, but with different fabrics , is another way to achieve this effect. A coffee table without defined borders, located in a room with simple lines, is another example of how to use textures in a professional manner.Textured accessoriesOur favorites They provide us with the possibility of adding texture to a space without having to plan it in excess. They also give us the opportunity to add texture in rooms that are already decorated, but that are somewhat flat and without contrasts. The trick in this case is not to overdo it. We will not add too many accessories or make a parade of textures throughout the room. Choose only some that produce the opposite effect to the area of the room where you are going to place them.We can play with the glass of vases, mirrors and items such as trays, sofa blankets, cushions, lamps and plants . These decorative elements easily provide us with the contrast of textures. The trick is to choose them in the materials and finishes that we do not already have in the room.Lighting: knowing how to use texturesThe lighting is usually one of the great forgotten when decorating our house. Interior designers always include the lighting scheme of their projects, but at a non-professional level, this is often forgotten. It is the light of the room that will add the most in the form of a visual character. Warm white light brings softness to a space, while cold white light adds hardness. On these two bases of the lights, you have to plan their location .Playing with direct and indirect lights is the best way to finish adding texture through lighting . Converting dark corners into reading centers with an appropriate floor lamp or table, or illuminating the pictures on the wall, are always successful when using textures intelligently.

Its romantic, nostalgic and delicate touch does not admit too many dark colors.Pastel, white or raw tones and even creamy beige are the tones that combine and highlight the floral patterns so characteristic of this look . As an accent, a small touch of some darker tone can be added, but very carefully. The furniture is painted in these pastel colors or we can even soften the wooden furniture that we don't want to color. The green tones can not be missing in this style, although our advice is that they are added within the patterns, in the form of branches or leaves. It also supports natural green plants.Textile layers and layersThis is one of the styles that uses more combination of fabrics. The fabrics in the British cottage are the real protagonists. Printed fabrics and pastel colors are the flag on which all this aesthetics is based.Flowers are the main theme and with them you can let your imagination fly , because they are not limited only to upholsteries. Floral prints are welcome in the cottage style on sofas, curtains or cushions. But they also have a privileged place at the bottom of the showcases, the lampshades and even on the walls. The trick is to choose them well and not overload the stay . And there you have your British cottage style reading corner .Also stack the books on the coffee tables in the living room or even give them a large round table to stack them all and that they are always available. These houses are full of natural floral arrangements everywhere . Lavender, violets, thyme and sage are elements with which to fill the beautiful ceramic vases of the countryside houses.Make sure you have flowers on the coffee table , side tables and sideboards. This style also allows us to add vintage elements almost without limit . Rocking chairs, cages full of plants and old porcelain pieces. Mix them with the books and don't forget to add some tray to serve the tea.

Some valuable keys of Feng Shui in decoration
The meaning of Feng Shui is "wind and water", and its mission is to balance the elements that make up the decoration of a space to create houses in harmony, where vital energy circulates correctly and does not escape or transform. The Feng Shui is an ancient art that is applied in decoration and basically constitutes a spiral in constant rotation. Each of the turns of this spiral arises from the previous one. The first round of the Feng Shui spiral in decoration would be "to organize your outer world to develop your inner world ", the second would be "to organize your outer space to enhance your inner world" ... and so on.The premise of the art of Feng Shui is that all places influence our lives. It is a wonderful philosophy that deals with the relationships between the visible and invisible forces of our world . In Feng Shui , the hall, for example, is associated with the fire element and is the perfect place to express and display art.The light and ventilation of Feng Shui in decorationWe start with the basics. The light in Feng Shui has a preferential place. This art requires that the rooms receive a lighting, preferably exterior, perfect . In Feng Shui we do not find any furniture or decorative element that hinders the entry of light. No objects are positioned in front of the windows and avoid leaving corners without lighting. The good ventilation of a house is as important or more than the light in Feng Shui . Keeping the rooms aired regularly prevents accumulated energies from stalling in them . It should be ventilated often. Pay special attention to opening windows while cleaning and after a shower or hot water bath. The bathroomsThere is a very old popular belief within Feng Shui that says that bathrooms are the focus of economic problems in a home. This art considers that the pipes are one of the channels that drain the vital energy , and with it, the resources also go away.It is very important in Feng Shui to keep the drains covered while they are not being used. The toilet lid must always be closed, as well as the entrance door. This approach holds that all drains can quickly remove Chi from the house if you are not careful with this. The predominant element in the bathrooms is water, and it must be balanced with the fire element and the earth element . For this, we can include in the bathroom decoration toilet supplies made of clay or wood; also scented candles and plants. The Feng Shui in decoration stairsThe stairs are one of the most complicated points of a house in terms of energy. The Feng Shui considers as "cascades" to lead the life energy too quickly from one floor to the other .Especially complex are the stairs that lead to an exit door. They originate circuits through which the vital energy escapes from the house . It is necessary to compensate them. The longer and steeper they are, the more care will be taken.A widely used strategy in Feng Shui is to place a large mirror in front of the stairs . The mirror reflection "hunts" symbolically the energy that escapes and projects it back to the upper floor. If at the top of the staircase has a bathroom, the power circuit can be reset by placing beside the door of the toilet, as Front possible the ladder, some furniture low, beige or neutral and placed above he some composition of bromeliad type plants .Water elementA house organized under the guidelines of Feng Shui must have the water element. Ideally, install a decorative fountain, where water flows . If this is not possible, it can be replaced by a picture with images of water, marine or any element that symbolizes it. Crystal decorative elements also symbolize water.Bed locationThe basic rule of Feng Shui for the location of the bed is that from it you can see it enters the room, but avoiding that the door is just in front . If it were, just place some element between the door and the bed. We serve some foot of bed, a trunk or other furniture that makes the times. The Feng Shui does not like too many mirrors in the bedroom. The mirrors activate the energies of the bedroom and interfere with sleep , causing agitation and insomnia. The bigger and closer to the bed, the more it will affect the quality of sleep. As for orientation, there is a widespread idea that it should be oriented to the north, but this is not really so. In Feng Shui , different orientations of the bed also have different benefits .Sleeping with the head facing north reinforces health and vitality . If you sleep with your head facing south, it promotes intuition , stimulates dreams and memory. The orientation towards the west decreases the vital rhythms with what is beneficial in stressful situations. On the contrary, an orientation towards the east has a tendency to accelerate life, which is very beneficial to overcome laziness.

When we set ourselves the task of dividing spaces, it can be for several reasons. Either you have to assign different areas to each brother so that each one has their own space, or that you divide the bedroom into areas with different purposes: a study area, a playground, and one more for rest . Anyway, today we are going to give you a lot of ideas on how to decorate the shared rooms. One room and several childrenWhen we talk about sharing a room with siblings , it is not always easy. The ages, tastes and habits of each can collide with those of the other.Hence it is so important to delimit each other's space very well of them and try, as far as possible, to have their own personality. You can paint each wall a color, use posters of your favorite characters and dress their beds with the tones they like best. It's about feeling like they own that space and that they are reflected in it.Divide and conquer: decorate shared roomsAn idea to separate environments in a children's room is to place a shelf that does its decorative function , storage function, and that delimits spaces very well. Without a doubt it is a most practical and functional solution, since you will kill several birds with one stone. If the bedroom is very small and does not fit a piece of furniture, you can also use a curtain fabric that separates when necessary, but remains open during the long afternoons of games .Now, if you have enough space, the best solution would be to place sliding doors along the bedroom. It is the same function of the curtains, but they give much more privacy and change the aesthetics of the environment completely. This is the most expensive alternative, but there are also a lot of variants that can be adjusted to different budgets .A little order when decorating shared roomsWe always talk to you about the importance of order, and even more so when there are several people who will live in the same environment. When it comes to children, no effort is over when talking about organization .We advise you to get the best accessories for cabinets, boxes with wheels, baskets, colored containers for your toys ... everything that can help you with this capital task .Do not forget, if you make it easy and make it attractive, it is easy for children to also collaborate in household chores . Decorate multipurpose shared roomsAs we said before, you may also need to divide the room to delimit the study area very well , regardless of the children who share it.In this case, the tips mentioned above may be useful; although you can use some tips extra like the ones we give you below.Study zoneYou have an article in which we tell you everything a study room should have so that it favors the concentration and creativity of the little ones. Basically, you need to create a quiet environment, without distractions, but that encourages their desire to learn and make them feel comfortable.Depending on the ages, you can place some puffs so that not everything has to be done on the desktop . And if we talk about divisions, a slate wall would be ideal for them to have where to aim, do their calculations or draw.Game's zoneHere comes the playful part, and this should leave enough space to give free rein to your imagination , but you must also provide them with the tools so they can be organized. Look at these ideas to keep your toys tidy .We suggest that you put a carpet with fun motifs in the area you want to leave for your games , and that there are containers, trunks and boxes so that everything stays stored later. As you can see, decorating shared rooms is not so complicated if you take into account their tastes and some basic rules of order and privacy.

Take a look at the room you want to dedicate for this task and decide the style you want to give it .Make sure you don't give this space any other utility . Nothing to accumulate junk, use as an ironing room, as a gym or share it with the study or work area.If you are going to use that room as a guest room, it must be for this use. In this way, you will avoid uncomfortable cleaning and relocation of junk at the last minute.Use only the best for the guest roomThere is nothing uglier and lacking in style than composing the guest room with the junk left over at home. Even if you are thinking of recycling some of your old furniture for use in this space, be sure to paint and restore them so that they are part of the wonderful set that this room deserves. The beds should be comfortable and cozy. Choose mattresses that seek the rest of your guests . Remember that they need space for your clothes. This includes a closet closet and a piece with drawers, bedside tables and a chest at the foot of the bed, or at least one standing clothes rack where to put the clothes of the day.The advice of not using the guest room for another purpose includes closets. It is very tempting to place the clothes of other seasons in the empty closets of the guest room, but this will only lead to more complications later. The cabinets must be empty, clean and scented . The only thing that should be inside the closet or drawers will be the bedding, several blankets and some extra pillows. All accessoriesA guest room is the perfect opportunity to display all our creative arts in interior decoration . Put yourself in the place of your guests. You will need beautiful lamps on the night tables . Curtains are another element that you should not leave at random.Ideally, combine a set of thick curtains with some type of curtain or lighter curtain. In this way, your guests can use the room at any time and the light will always be the one they choose or need for their rest. You probably have guests at any time of the year. For this reason, it is important that you also ensure that the temperature will always be ideal .The heating must work properly, and for the hottest months, if air conditioning is not available, the guest room must be equipped with a ceiling or column fan system.Special touches in a guest roomDo not forget to place a good dressing mirror, a dressing area and, if you have enough room, add a nice reading corner. Do not skimp, place books, a good armchair, fresh flowers and toiletries . Think of the smallest but essential details.Your guests do not like to bother asking for things. Add a couple of towel sets , an alarm clock, a wastebasket, a nice napkin, if the bedroom is en suite and has its own bathroom, make sure there is absolutely nothing missing.BeddingEverything in this room will say a lot about you, your tastes, your hospitality and your good work. And the best element to start pampering your guests is the bedding . Sheets, duvet and pillows should be new and exclusively for this bedroom .In specialty stores there are endless bedding to choose from. Our advice is that with the sheets you decide on something blank and of good quality . Although it seems that white is a dirtier color, it is also true that it is the easiest to wash and the only one that allows disinfection with bleach.Like a hotel roomKeep it always clean and ironed. You must have several games ready at all times. Add to the bed all the pillows and items that you would add to yours .The colors we will use in the guest room will depend on your tastes, although our advice is to decorate it in neutral tones: beige , creams or stone gray .A guest room will be classic, luxurious, elegant and without stripes of color. Ideally, follow the boutique hotel style that has many of the keys you need for a space like this.Do not place photos or personal collections. Your personality will reflect it in good taste, but the stay must be somewhat impersonal to not make your guests feel that they are invading your private space.

It is a color palette that inspires balance and peace . Therefore, a bedroom in neutral tones is always a good idea.In addition, they are rabidly fashionable, and they will be for a long time. All rooms in the house benefit from a decoration in neutral tones, but, perhaps, the bedroom is the ideal place to recreate this sense of balance that is so necessary to recover when we get home to rest.A bedroom in neutral tones provides nights of restful sleep and adds a plus of recollection and serenity. But what are the tones that we can use to decorate a bedroom in neutral tones?Let's get away from the classic vanilla color on the walls, which has been forced into bedrooms for years. The palette of neutral tones is very wide, and offers us many shades to play and combine perfectly . There are many surfaces in a bedroom where we can apply our neutral tones in different grades and shapes. Let's see it.We start on the groundGenerally, the floors of a bedroom can easily be found already in some neutral tone. The wooden floors or tiles in neutral colors (ivory colored earth) , serve as a basis to begin our bedroom decor in neutral tones. It is for this reason that we will begin adding pieces from the ground to gradually work upwards . Some carpets warm and comfortable are a must in any bedroom. And for us the first opportunity to add a neutral tone to our design.Natural fiber carpets, such as jute or sisal, are perfect. If what is intended is to get a better feeling of quality and coat, we will choose cotton rugs in soft stone or gray tones, taupes , or even white, beige or cream tones .Discreet colors but of great power. We can opt for small side carpets, although the greatest impact is provided by large carpets partly covered by the bed . Even carpets in neutral tones make a difference. The walls of a bedroom in neutral tonesBased on our floor in neutral tones we can start working the walls. We will start by observing all the architectural elements of the room: baseboards, cornices or architraves. The roof beams are also part of this second phase , as the roofs of the walls always consider in interior decoration. We will plan a color scheme, and decide how many shades to use and where. Using more than one neutral tone, in the same or different range, adds depth to the space and gives it a strong character. Remember to include the ceiling in this color scheme , do not systematically condemn it to the traditional white tone. The furniture of neutral tonesThe furniture provides us with a source of inspiration and exploration of varied forms and materials . The wooden ones are perfect for a bedroom in neutral tones, but through painting we can achieve the same effect on other types of furniture.Mirrors are other magnificent resources for a bedroom in neutral tones . We will see them both on walls and on furniture surfaces. Mirror bedside tables, even storage furniture, dressers and auxiliary mirror furniture are perfect for this type of decoration.Fabrics for a bedroom in neutral tonesThe textiles are the major players in the bedroom. It is one of the areas of the house that we will find more surfaces covered with fabrics . Therefore, curtains, quilts, blankets and pillows and all upholsteries offer us new opportunities to continue adding neutral tones. We must also remember that it is the textiles of a room that give us greater and better options to play with textures . The different textures add visual richness, and make a space interesting.Mix different textures, such as satin and silks, with luxurious velvets or mohair . Imitation skins are also another good resource for our bedroom in neutral tones.

Decorate the dining room: formal vs. informal
Deciding on a formal or informal dining room depends on several factors, the dimensions of the house and, also, our personal tastes. Today we wonder if we want a formal dining room, an informal dining room or, perhaps, both. Our way of life, the small size of the town houses and the trends in decoration on open-plan houses are affecting the way we decorate the dining room .It seems that the formal dining room loses points against the idea of a more informal dining room . But is that really so? The advantages of having a formal dining room are many, although deciding on an informal dining room is also a good bet.Basically, it will depend on the space you have at home and your lifestyle . If you like to receive and cook for your friends and family, or if your way of life is not especially reflected in your relationship with food , there are several factors to analyze when deciding on one of the two options.Let's stop and analyze what differences exist between one and the other , and what are the most current ideas to decorate each of them. In this way, it will be a little easier for you to decide on either one when you go to decorate the dining room. What do we understand by informal dining? There are several types of informal dining. We may use an area of the living room or kitchen to install the dining room, that is, a space that is shared with some other area of the house . In addition, this space can be given other uses, such as working, studying or using it to keep home accounting. These are spaces that are used for everything : breakfast , lunch and dinner, and it is also where we serve our guests when we have guests at home. This idea is increasingly widespread, to the point of having given them a very prominent priority in the demands to decorate the dining room. They began as small corners of breakfast and have gained ground. On the other hand, many of the houses and apartments built prior to the fashion of open silverware included the dining room in the same room as the living room. These are also considered as informal dining rooms. Therefore, they are flexible and dynamic spaces .Decorate the informal dining roomDecorating the informal dining room, as we have seen, does not depend so much on the distribution of space. In this case, we focus on the type of furniture, starting with the table. The aesthetics of an informal dining room does not dress the table .When we leave the table without setting, it is an invitation to sit down for any other activity. Therefore, on an informal dining table, the decoration will be very simple . We will not find more than a simple floral center and nothing more .As for the chairs, we can increase the feeling of informal dining through its style and upholstery. Avoid the classic cut chairs , antiques and delicate upholstery . The chairs in an informal dining room are preferably comfortable and easy to keep clean. What do we understand as a formal dining room?We go to the opposite extreme and now make a commitment to the return of the formal dining room. This happens, unavoidably, for having a room exclusively for the dining room . This room is not used for daily meals, and is always reserved for special occasions. It also has space for several guests. One expects from a formal dining room that at least 6 or 8 people can sit at the table .At present, the formal dining room - when it is available - is usually used daily by the family during the most important meal of the day , or during which they all share, usually being dinner.Decorate the formal dining roomTo decorate the formal dining room, we must consider how much and when we will use it. If we are going to reserve it only to attend guests, we will choose a large table, always rectangular and majestic , in which we can accommodate many people. The same advice we will follow for the choice of chairs. Chairs are decorative elements capable of changing the decoration of a room by themselves . We will prefer, preferably, elegant chairs without arms, since these create a lighter aesthetic and suggest proximity.High-backed chairs are much more formal than low-back chairs . We do not neglect the decoration of the rest of the room. This dining room is given special care in the provision of tablecloths, napkins and all the accessories of a formal meal.Decorating the formal dining room includes adding furniture for the dishes, showcases, auxiliary cars and, if we have space and budget, a good fireplace that will delight our guests and our own, with all the luxury and sophistication of the large dining rooms of yore.
